Chest Pain is any physical pain in any organ between your neck and your upper abdomen.

Chest pain is a common symptom of anxiety because when you are anxious, the brain and body set off an immediate stress response, the body prepares to fight back or run away.

We live in a world where feeling worried, fearful, or nervous from time to time is quite normal for most people due to happenings in everyday life.

So many people experience anxiety frequently, but unfortunately, anxiety chestpain has symptoms that closely look like that of a heart attack, making it hard to differentiate.

The truth is not all incidents of chest pain are signs of a heart attack, sometimes the uncomfortable, painful, and frightening symptoms are that of anxiety or other conditions.

In fact, research suggests that one of every four persons seeking treatment for chest pain is actually suffering from anxiety disorder.

What anxiety chest pain feels like...?

Anxiety chest pain is mostly described as a sharp, hurting sensation that starts suddenly when someone is  feeling stressed or anxious.

Some common symptoms of anxiety include;
  • Chest pain
  • shortness of breath
  • tightness in your chest
  • dizziness
  • upset stomach
  • Increased heart rate
  • numbness and sweating 


Let's look into anxiety chest pain vs. heart attack chest pain

  • Chest pain caused by anxiety typically lasts around 10-15 minutes, but that of a heart attack can last for a longer period and the pain gradually increases.

  • Pain from a heart attack frequently move from the chest to other parts of the body, such as the jaw, shoulders, and arms, but chest pain caused by anxiety remains in the chest.

  • When it's anxiety chest pain you can be relieved by taking water, antacids or taking deep breaths, or even visualizing something you love, all these might not work for heart attack chestpain. 

  • Anxiety chest pain may also feel sharper than the pain caused by a heart attack, which people often describe as a squeezing, heavy pressure.

  • Chest pain caused by anxiety may occur more often while at rest, meanwhile heart attacks most often develops when one is active.

  • Anxiety chest pain are more common in women, heart attacks are more common in men.


However, If you do not have a history of  anxiety and you experience chest pain often, you may need to see a doctor.  

Doctor might need to evaluate you and determine whether you’re having a cardiac arrest or there’s another reason for your chest pain.
